Sweden’s new role demands enhanced readiness

Sweden’s membership in NATO and the ongoing strengthening of our defense capabilities are direct responses to the increasingly challenging security environment in our region. As a NATO member, Sweden not only enhances its own security but also contributes to the overall strength of the alliance. This membership shifts Sweden’s role from partner to fully integrated ally.

NATO’s collective defense is built on the national capabilities of each member. As an ally, Sweden plays a key role in strengthening NATO’s overall defense capacity. This brings with it greater responsibility and a higher demand for Sweden’s ability to receive and support allied forces. To meet these demands, we must expand and develop our Host Nation Support capacity.

  • Sweden Must Be Able to Receive and Support Allied Forces
As part of NATO, Sweden is expected to coordinate and support allied troop transports and operations—both during exercises and in real-world scenarios. Achieving this requires a robust, well-coordinated, and flexible system.
  • The Crucial Role of Civil-Military Cooperation
Much of the infrastructure needed to support military operations is owned and operated by civilian actors. This means we need more framework agreements, closer collaboration, and the ability to scale up operations quickly when necessary.
  • Sweden’s Strategic Location Requires Preparedness for Transit
Located between the Nordic countries and the Baltics, Sweden is a key transit country. To ensure smooth and secure transport of troops and materiel, a developed Host Nation Support capability is essential.

  • Regional Expertise and Military Resources Tailored to Nordic Conditions.
Sweden is uniquely positioned to operate naval forces in the specific conditions of the Baltic Sea, making our expertise and capabilities crucial in this region.

To meet the new demands of NATO membership, Sweden is committed to enhancing its capacity to receive and support allied forces. This includes creating a flexible, coordinated approach to rapidly activate civilian resources such as transport, logistics, and infrastructure. Our geographic location further emphasizes the need for smooth transit of troops and materiel through the country.
